The Eastern Grey Squirrel are like rats in my neighborhood of oaks and loblolly pine! They chew open bird boxes, knock down bird feeders to get to the seed, and dig up and destroy plants. They seem to watch you from the trees and then come right behind you and dig up and eat what you just planted. They will dig out all the soil in a pot to see if there is anything worth eating. Did I mention they grow as large as a small cat?
Even the bird boxes with the metal protectors over the holes are no match!
The redbuds are blooming! It is impossible to capture the beauty of a tree in a picture so a close up will have to do!
The Eastern Redbud blooms along the top half where as the Asian redbuds will bloom at every leaf node along the entire plant. The Eastern redbud reseeds very easily,too. There are always volunteers around the garden.
In the vegetable garden the arugula is coming along but the squirrels are digging through the carrots! The chives look nice with a few sweet violets here and there.
The ferns continue to unfurl fiddler heads.
These are Japanese painted ferns below. They will become a silvery green.
Oh! And I did see Jesus on Blount Street last outside an Irish pub! I guess everyone needs a pint every now and then?

The crazy squirrels here are chewing on my house! It’s not like they are hungry because they clean out every bird feeder as soon as I put seed out. I guess they are just sharpening their teeth!
All that is flowering in your garden is pretty. Spring is here finally!

Yes, squirrels have deterred me from planting veggies here. They make huge nests in our Maple trees and devour anything in site. BUT so far, there is little for them. The ground is still frozen and we had 4 cm of snow this morning. But things are warming up and the first tulips are poking up beside cement basements. Last night I almost ran over a racoon, indicating the end of hibernation season and the promise of spring!

Redbuds are beautiful trees but you don’t see many around here.

Squirrels are a pain. We poison rats, but not squirrels. I think it is their furry tails. I gave up on vegetable gardening because of them. They chew up my outdoor furniture, wood fence and dig plants out of pots.

Gah! Substitute your squirrels for my rats and I completely feel your pain. One year, I hope to actually eat one of my home-grown tomatoes…

I will share this post with Mr. D as he has an ongoing war with squirrels. He will be happy to know he is not alone. We purchased a squirrel proof bird feeder from Wild Birds last year and it is the best investment we have ever made. It is absolutely squirrel proof and Mr. D loves to watch them try to figure it out. HeHe!!!

The American Eastern Gray Squirrel has been introduced to Britain and is causing so much problems but I don’t think they have been introduced to the Continent yet?
