The island is at sea level and one of the buildings has signs which mark the depth of the water of past storms on the island.The house where my grandmother grew up will be restored and become an inn with gardens.The gardens called The Commons. The Ocracoke lighthouse During World War II a British ship was torpedoed off the coast and the soldiers died. The are laid to rest in the British Cemetery. The island is very subtropical as it is surrounded by warm water. It is famous for its fig trees and fig preserves and fig cake.
Yes. Most houses have houses have been raised to be above the storm level. It became a hotel in the 60s and they added wings of rooms. The new owners have returned it to a house and is restoring it as an event space with gardens.
