First Friday is celebrated on the first Friday of each month throughout Downtown Raleigh to showcase the best of our city’s creative community. Thousands venture downtown to visit art galleries & studios open late to host exhibits, artist talks, and creative activities. Retailers and restaurants also get in on the fun with live music, vendor markets, specials/discounts, and more.
The evening begins with a walk to the Moore Square Art District passing many new apartments and rehabbed building to house all the people moving to the area. Seems every article about places to move or growing areas always list Raleigh, North Carolina!
Moore Square is one of the planed five squares of parks created by the Dutch city planner, William Christmas, in the 1790s after the revolutionary war with Great Britain for independence when colony leaders were creating a new centralized state capital. The original plan can be seen in the names of the streets. It is original layout is bound by North Street, West Street, South Street, and East Street. Tonight’s movie was Back To the Future.I do not know why this old bank building is lit in green and red on the 2nd day of September? With the small batch brewery popularity there are many small bars/ bottle shops in Downtown Raleigh. This one is called The Green Monkey, featuring local gifts, foods, and small brewer beers and ciders. They also host a run club, trivia night, bingo, and other events for people to come together. Tonight, on First Friday gallery crawl, they have a local artist featured.
